We know there is a market for products with high levels of energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Our consumers want appliances that are safe, do not contain hazardous materials, have low noise levels and that are produced under good working conditions.

Our greatest potential to positively influence the environment is to improve energy efficiency and water use while our products are in operation—more than 80% of their life cycle impact occurs during use. Electricity used for appliances accounts for approximately 4% of the total CO₂ emissions in Europe. We therefore support appropriate standards for product energy consumption and strongly advocate the use of energy labelling.

Electrolux was among the first in our industry that lobbied actively for individual responsibility, since we recognized the correlation between producer responsibility and making products recyclable.

Electrolux Air-O-Steam oven

-- Since considerable amounts of humidity are produced in the cavity of ovens during professional cooking use, the Electrolux Air-O-Steam oven is equipped with a patented steam control. The oven has the added advantage of being able to use the 'half power' mode to avoid peaks of consumption, thereby improving energy efficiency. With steam cooking, vitamins and mineral salts are retained, much of the fat content in meat and fish is dispersed and roasting does not require fat or oil.

Ecoguida

During 2004-2005, Rex Electrolux and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Italy produced and distributed 80,000 copies of a new edition of Ecoguida. Illustrated by school children, this accessible guide to efficient use of appliances and selection of eco-efficient appliances is targeted to consumers.

ERP

In 2004, Electrolux established the first pan-European platform for management of waste products together with Sony, Hewlett Packard and Braun.
